Maxamet is one of the hardest commercially available knife steels, achieving 68–70 HRC. Developed by Carpenter Technology, it offers unmatched edge retention but sacrifices toughness and corrosion resistance.

Advantages

  • Extreme edge retention — holds an edge longer than almost any other steel
  • Superb wear resistance for abrasive cutting tasks

Disadvantages

  • Low toughness — prone to chipping if used roughly or laterally stressed
  • Low corrosion resistance — requires drying after use
  • Very difficult to sharpen; requires diamond abrasives

Best Use Cases

  • Precision cutting tasks where edge life is paramount
  • Knives used for cardboard, rope, or other abrasive materials
